Christian Hope, Aging, and Life After Aphasia

Aging, disability, and aphasia do not erase a person’s dignity, calling, intelligence, or capacity for meaningful service. Christian hope does not deny loss. It faces suffering truthfully while trusting that a person’s life remains precious before GOD through every season.

“I would have lost heart, unless I had believed that I would see the goodness of the LORD in the land of the living.”
Psalm 27:13 (NKJV)

Life After the Stroke

In 2018, the stroke resulted in aphasia. Aphasia can affect speaking, understanding, reading, or writing, but it does not make the person less human or automatically remove intelligence. Communication may become slower, especially under stress. Words may be difficult to retrieve even when meaning remains alive within the person.

My own journey after the stroke continued through education, ministry, scholarship, and writing. In May 2026, at age 86, I earned a PhD in Counseling and Psychological Studies from Regent University. I do not present this accomplishment as proof that faith causes a particular medical outcome. I present it as lived testimony that disability and advanced age do not have to end learning, purpose, hope, or service.

Communicating With a Person Who Has Aphasia

  • Speak respectfully to the person, not merely to the caregiver.
  • Use clear sentences and allow additional time for a response.
  • Do not complete every sentence unless help is requested.
  • Reduce noise, pressure, and competing conversations.
  • Offer writing, pictures, gestures, or yes-and-no choices when helpful.
  • Confirm meaning without treating the person like a child.
  • Recognize fatigue and permit rest.

Accessibility is not pity. It is a form of justice, hospitality, and sacrificial LOVING. When a community makes communication accessible, it permits gifts, wisdom, humor, faith, and experience to remain present among us.

Christian Hope and Aging

Christian communities sometimes celebrate youth while speaking about old age mainly as decline. Scripture gives a fuller vision. Older adults carry memory, testimony, responsibility, and the continuing possibility of fruitfulness. Healthspan matters, but human worth does not depend upon strength, speed, independence, productivity, or the absence of illness.

Hope is not presumption. It does not promise that every illness will disappear or that every plan will be completed. Hope entrusts life to GOD while encouraging wise medical care, rehabilitation, education, relationship, prayer, service, and responsible stewardship. It asks not only, “What have I lost?” but also, “What faithful possibility remains today?”

A Hope-Centered Practice

  1. Name the present difficulty honestly before GOD.
  2. Receive appropriate medical, rehabilitation, and communication support.
  3. Meditate upon a biblical passage without turning it into a guaranteed formula.
  4. Identify one accessible action connected with meaning or service.
  5. Welcome assistance without surrendering personhood or voice.
  6. Celebrate faithful progress, including progress that appears small.

The person living with aphasia is still present. The older adult is still becoming. Through CHRIST JESUS, hope can coexist with grief, and meaningful service can take new forms. Our task is to build families, churches, schools, healthcare settings, and communities in which people are heard, honored, supported, and invited to contribute.
