Sacrificial LOVE and Forgivingness in Christian Living

Sacrificial LOVE and forgivingness belong near the heart of Christian living because CHRIST JESUS did not present LOVE as a private feeling. HE commanded HIS followers to embody LOVE in relationship, service, truth, mercy, and costly faithfulness.

“This is My commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you.”
John 15:12 (NKJV)

Sacrificial LOVE and Sacrificial LOVING

The two expressions are closely related, but they emphasize different dimensions. Sacrificial LOVE names the enduring divine principle, disposition, and gift: LOVE that seeks another person’s true good even when faithfulness carries a cost. Sacrificial LOVING names the continuing practice of that LOVE: listening, serving, telling the truth with compassion, keeping appropriate commitments, protecting the vulnerable, and choosing mercy rather than vengeance.

Sacrifice does not mean surrendering truth, accepting abuse, or remaining in danger. Christian LOVE can require firm boundaries, accountability, professional assistance, and protection. LOVE does not rejoice in wrongdoing. It seeks what is genuinely good before GOD.

What Is Forgivingness?

Forgivingness is more than one isolated decision. It is a developing readiness to respond to injury without becoming governed by retaliation. It includes bringing pain honestly before GOD, releasing personal vengeance, praying for wisdom, and pursuing reconciliation when repentance, safety, and circumstances make reconciliation appropriate.

Forgiveness and reconciliation are related, but they are not identical. Forgiveness may begin within the wounded person’s relationship with GOD. Reconciliation ordinarily requires truth, accountability, changed behavior, and the willing participation of those involved. Trust may need to be rebuilt slowly, and sometimes safe boundaries must remain.

Why These Principles Matter

Unresolved injury can shape speech, attention, relationships, and daily choices. Yet superficial demands to “just forgive” may silence pain rather than heal it. CHRIST JESUS-centered forgivingness makes room for lament, truth, justice, mercy, patience, and wise support. It refuses both revenge and denial.

Sacrificial LOVING may appear in ordinary actions: caring for an aging parent, listening to a person with aphasia without rushing, apologizing without excuses, refusing humiliating speech, sharing resources, honoring a covenant, or serving someone who cannot repay us.

A Daily Reflection

  1. Where is GOD calling me to practice sacrificial LOVING today?
  2. Whose dignity must I protect in my words and decisions?
  3. Is there an injury I need to bring truthfully before GOD?
  4. Do I need to offer forgiveness, seek forgiveness, establish a boundary, or request wise help?
  5. What faithful action can I take through CHRIST JESUS?

Christian formation is not demonstrated by religious language alone. It becomes visible through the quality of our LOVE, the truthfulness of our repentance, the wisdom of our boundaries, and the mercy with which we treat other people. Sacrificial LOVE and forgivingness are not signs of weakness. Under the LORDSHIP of CHRIST JESUS, they are practices of courageous faithfulness.
